Rare 1820s Letter by "Father" of Mycotoxicology

Paulet, [Jean Jacques]

Autograph Note Signed.  No place or date  [Paris, ca. 1825). 4¾ x 6¾ 1 pg. In French. Addressed on verso to M. Sherwill, fils, Fontainbleau, offering a work which may “interest the English nation.” A rare scientific autograph.

Paulet (1740-1826) was a French physician and surgeon, a correspondent of Voltaire’s, who published books on protection against Smallpox, on poisonous snakes, on Mesmer’s “Animal Magnetism” (hypnosis), and, most notably, two now-classic studies of Mushrooms (one posthumous edition with 200 added color plates).

Paulet's works launched the scientific study of “Myco-toxicology” – identifying which mushrooms were edible and which poisonous.  We could find no record of any of Paulet’s books being published in England. The recipient of the letter was probably Captain Markham Sherwill who made an early scientific ascent of Mont Blanc in 1825.
