Revealing collection of documents, shedding light on mortality in Cuba during the last decade of Spanish rule. These certificates discuss the origins of the slaves, mentioning not only Africa as their origin, but a couple of documents also more specifically indicate the "Congo" and "Ganga", as areas of origin in Africa. The illnesses they died from are also typically listed and some of these include: "delirium", "softening of the brain" ("resblandicimiento del cerebro"), typhoid fever, pleurisy, "organic affection of the heart", alcoholism intoxication etc. There are also two Death Certificates for young children "of color", signed by C. C. Coppinger, (a famous doctor in the 19th century). A comprehensive and rare historical archive of both African slavery and medicine in the 19th century.
