2 volumes in 1. Volume I title-page printed in red & black, both title-pages with large copper-engraved pictorial vignettes; engraved additional general title, engraved by G. Du-Bose after Thornhill, representing Moses writing the first words of Genesis. . Illustrated with about 60 large pictorial engravings (about a quarter to a third of a pages each), serving as head and tailpieces; engraved pictorial initials. (Large folio) 47.5x30.5 cm (18¾x12"), period full red straight-grain morocco, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt; modern folding cloth box.

Massive and well- illustrated Bible, commonly referred to as the "Vinegar Bible," due to the misprint "The parable of the vinegar" (for vineyard) in the headline above Luke xx. Herbert calls it "A magnificent edition, printed in large type. With many plates at the beginning and end of books, engraved on steel [sic] from the designs of various artists. Some of the initial letters are similarly engraved. Unfortunately the book contained many misprints, and earned the nickname 'A Baskett-ful of Errors'..." The designers for the engravings include Thornhill, L. Cheron, and L. Laguerre, and the engravers Lud. du Guerier, G. DuBose; G. Van der Gucht, C. Dupuis and Cochein. Herbert 942A.

Lot Amendments

Covers worn, detached, spine chipped and lacking pieces; some early and latter leaves loose, marginal repairs to final leaf, some staining and soiling within; just good, but an significant folio Bible worthy of restoration.

We have a full service shipping department to ensure proper packing and safe delivery of purchases at reasonable cost. We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
