A Harvard Ph.D. and the first African-American Rhodes Scholar, Locke is often called “the father of the Harlem Renaissance” because of his encouragement of Black writers, musicians, and artists – including Aaron Douglas, the illustrator of this book and one of the premiere Black artists of the Art Deco period. Among the selections in the anthology is Eugene O’Neill’s "Emperor Jones", with a photograph of Paul Robeson in the starring role.
