The club is a brown sheath steel shafted putter with a special carved wooden head (persimmon?) with a rounded face and is stamped 'Walter Hagen' on top of the head. With a dual reminder pistol grip. Approximately 35" in length.
Experimental one-of-a-kind putter designed by and made for Walter Hagen, and later given to Chuck Kocsis. This putter was designed by Hagen and made for him at the L.A. Young (Walter Hagen) golf factory in Detroit in the late 30’s. In a sworn affidavit in Kocsis’ hand before a Notary Public, Chuck Kocsis relates the following. “I was there when Walter Hagen gave Dick Link the plant supervisor, instructions on how he wanted this club made. A few years later, having lunch with Walter at Red Run, I asked him about the club. He said, it was at the plant and I could go and see Dick Link and pick it up”. Signed and dated February 15, 1997. “Chuck Kocsis was one of the great amateur golfers to ever grace the game. A lifelong golfer, Kocsis didn’t play the game for the money. He played for the joy and the camaraderie. He was never out of place on a golf course, which explains all those rounds of golf he played with presidents, royalty, Hollywood celebrities and champion athletes.” -Kupelian. Forever Scratch, Chuck Kocsis – An Amateur For The Ages, 2007. Included with the club is the Notarized affidavit, as well as an identification tag with the club’s history once tied to the club, both in Kocsis’ hand. Very good to fine condition with some wear to the unique pistol grip as used by Hagen. Provenance: Chuck Kocsis to Dr. Bob Redisch, sold at PBA Galleries, 2/3/2011.
