Two manuscript cookbooks in Spanish, from Mexico, created by a young girl

Puebla, Mexico

Two cookbooks, comprising:

  • Approx. 90 pages. Ink holograph on lined pages in a notebook. 22.5x16.5 cm (8¾x6½"), printed wrappers, contents sewn but now loose as a unit within the wrappers.
  • Approx. 240 pages. Ink holograph on lined paper in a notebook. 22.5x16.5 cm (8¾x6½"), half cloth & gilt-lettered boards.

Very neatly written and well-organized manuscript cookbooks, the first in a notebook from a Puebla school supply store, the second in a notebook lettered on cover and on inside page “Escuela de pequeñas industrias del estado de Puebla”. The schools of “pequeñas industrias” were intended for girls who, not having access to the boys' schools, were given a chance to attend institutions where they learned technical abilities that were more “suited” for girls, such as cooking and sewing. The recipes include: Frijoles de Toluca, huevos a la mexicana, te compuesto (includes habanero chili), molletes de santa clara, a selection of frutal based wines, huevos cuahtemoc, etc. The second with the name of the student, Maria Lisa Sanchez, on the front page.
