Title:
A Course of Lectures on Dramatic Art and Literature
Author:
Schlegel, Augustus William
Place:
London
Publisher:
Henry G. Bohn
Date:
1846
Description:

vii, 536 pp. Half-title present, frontispiece portrait. (8vo) 17.7x11.5 cm (7x4½")19th century brown half calf, marbled paper boards, black leather labels, gilt lettering, supplied clamshell box with gilt lettered spine.

Fine provenance: from the library of William Makepeace Thackeray, with his small embossed oval monogram at the head of the title-page. Later this was the property of American author Charles Francis Adams (probably junior, but that is not clear) , with his bookplate on the front paste-down. The binding was probably done for Adams; the lettering on the spine reads “From Thackeray’s Library.”  In a near-contemporary hand someone has neatly written in ink around Thackeray’s embossed stamp on the title-page: “The crest and monogram of / William Makepeace Thackeray; This having been one of his books.”
