R. Crumb Handwritten Letter: Lot of Two, c. 2010

Crumb, Robert

Two original letters, hand-written by R. Crumb in pencil on 8.5" x 11" paper. Undated. Signed "R. Crumb." Excellent condition. Crumb's 21st c. epistolary technique is as follows: his brother-in-law Alex prints out emails addressed to Crumb; the un-tech-savvy Crumb writes his response on paper; Alex transcribes the handwritten letter into email, sends the email to the correspondent and saves the letter. A collector has latterly made an exclusive deal to obtain Crumb's handwritten email drafts; thus, these "email letters" are now essentially off the market.

"What is your reaction to the crazy sexual comics I've done? ... I would certainly be interested in meeting you ... You are a beautiful woman."

Two letters by Crumb to an Italian woman who wrote him a fan letter. Fascinating, spicy stuff affording insights into how a brilliant, reclusive cartoonist is able to achieve sexual success by dint of his artistic prowess. Fellow nerds take heed: "I am intrigued, as you are the first and only female from Italy that I have heard from who is a genuine fan of my work. I have some questions which I hope you won't mind answering: ...What is your reaction to the crazy sexual comics I've done? Do you ignore the sex stuff? Are you offended by it, or do you find it amusing, or what? Are you a big woman? ... I would certainly be interested in meeting you..." The second letter, in response to the Italian lady's reply, moves the game forward: "You're certainly welcome to stop by here for a visit if you're in the area... I might just take advantage of your generous invitation to stay at your place in Florence... Thanks for sending the photo of yourself. You are a beautiful woman... Send more photos! Full body shots!"
