On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life

Darwin, Charles

John Murray

ix, 502 pp. Folding diagram. 20x12 cm (7¾x4¾"), original green cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, covers stamped in blind, pale brown clay-glazed endpapers. Second Edition, Second Issue, with "Fifth Thousand" on title page.

Scarce second edition of one of the most important scientific works of any century. The 1250 copies of the first edition of 1859 sold out almost immediately and a second edition was quickly prepared. This second issue of the book, dated 1860 and identified “Fifth Thousand” on the title page is the standard form of the book; only 2 copies of the first issue are known (bearing an 1859 publication date with no mention of “Fifth Thousand” on the title page).  Though the date on the title page is 1860, the book was published and announced on December 26, 1859, in the same issue olf The Times as Huslwy's review. This copy does not have the 32-page publisher's catalogue dated January 1860 inserted at rear, with no signs of removal, an unusual feature which may indicate it as one of the earlier copies. Remains of the binder's ticket of "Edmonds & Remnants, London" to rear pastedown. Freeman binding variant "a" with upright of "L" in London over right-hand upright of "H" in John. Ink notation "Paris 1961" to front pastedown. Freeman 376.

Lot Amendments

Slight rubbing to joints and extremities, ΒΌ" tear to spine cloth at the left corner of the top triangle; a few small spots of glue residue and adhesion to endpapers; still a very good or better copy, bright and fresh.
