Egypt and Nubia from Drawings Made on the Spot...

Roberts, David

F.G. Moon

3 volumes bound in 2. With historical descriptions by William Brockedon. Three lithograph title pages with vignettes, map, and 121 duotone lithographs by Louis Haghe from drawings by David Roberts, 62 of which are full page, 59 half-page, some tinted including the celebrated view of the Sphinx. (Large folio) 60.4x45 cm (23¾x17¾"), 19th century red full morocco bound by J. Clark with wide gilt borders and corner fleurons, spines tooled and lettered in gilt with raised bands, all edges gilt, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers.

The handsome folio edition of Roberts' travels in Egypt, the sketches for which had been bought by F.G. Moon for £3,000 in 1840. Never before had the ancient sites of Gizeh, Karnac, Luxor, etc. been portrayed on such a splendid scale. As such, Roberts was keen for Hague to receive due recognition of the finished work claiming "Hague has not only surpassed himself, but all that has hitherto been done of a similar nature. He has rendered the views in a style clear, simple and unlaboured, with a masterly vigour and boldness which none but a painter like him could have transferred to stone." Abbey, Travel, 272 & 385 & 388. All plates present, but plates 3-20 as called for in Vol. II are bound in Volume I.

Due to the size and/or weight of this lot extra shipping and/or handling charges may apply.

Lot Amendments

A few scuffs with light rubbing to edges and corners, heavier rubbing along fore-edge of Vol. II, some flaking to gilt at fore-edges; front hinges of both volumes cracked, tear to front free endpaper of Vol. I repaired with tape, front free endpaper and first preliminary blank of Vol. II starting from head, light foxing, a few chips and tears to guards; very good or better.
