Life in the Open: Sport with Rod, Gun, Horse and Hound in Southern California

Holder, Charles Frederick

New York

G. P. Putnam's Sons

93 pages. With halftone relief illustrations from photographs. Original deep green cloth binding, with a striking gilt-decorated pictorial binding designed by the famous Decorative Designers studio featuring riders on horseback, leaping hounds, deer, sea lions, and swimming fish. First Edition.

Southern California's most prominent sportsman, the father of modern big game fishing, and a Pasadena resident who helped found the Tournament of Roses, Holder ranges farther afield in this book to provide the best overview of sporting life in the region at the dawn of the twentieth century. Includes lively anecdotes of hunting lynx in the Arroyo Seco, and fox with the Valley Hunt Club, as well as coaching on the mountain road at Catalina Island, and trolling for tuna among the Channel Islands. In retrospect, Holder recorded the most diverse account in his time of the wild environment in Southern California. This copy is inscribed with the "compliments of the publisher" on the front flyleaf. Bruns, H..: Angling Books of the Americas, #H-228; Dawson Eighty, #28; Wetzel, C.: American Fishing Books, p.160.
