Title:
Manuscript list of Cuban slave owners who are mortgaging their slaves, with additional details on the slaves being mortgaged

Author:

Place:
Cuba

Publisher:

Date:
1838

Description:

[16] pp. (the two final leaves blank) plus two additional smaller leaves written on both sides. 30.5x21.5 (12x8½") & 23.5x21.5 (9¼x8½") or a bit smaller. Unbound.

Rare listing of about 300 slave owners mortgaging ("hipotecados") their slaves. There are about half a dozen slave owners listed who are specifically mortgaging their Chinese slaves. Two accompanying manuscripts have details of some of the slaves being mortgaged, including one entry alone listing over 100 slaves (including many African slaves, Congo, Carabali, Mandinga…). One entry includes the details of a "china" (a female Chinese slave - quite rare) who was mortgaged, along with "negro" slaves. An extraordinarily rare manuscript.
