Inscribed by Marianne Moore on the front free endpaper to Barbara Church who is mentioned in the Foreword, "Please feel, dear Barbara, that they have the lilt, from Marianne Moore, with love, May 17, 1954. " Henry Church and his wife Barbara were patrons of the arts in 1930s-50s France, and were friends with many of the important writers of the era. Signed by Moore at the limitation as well, as issued. This translation of the Fables of La Fontaine was reportedly suggested by Miss Moore's friend W.H. Auden, took almost a decade, and earned Miss Moore the Croix de Chevalier des Arts et Lettres of the French Ministry of Culture (1957)
