Travels in Beloochistan and Sinde; Accompanied by a Geographical and Historical Account of Those Countries

Pottinger, Henry

Longman, Hurst, Rees, et al

xxx, 423 pp. Illustrated with hand-colored frontispiece and large folding map. 25.9x20.5 cm (10¼x8"), rebound with original spine strip laid down, quarter modern calf, marbled boards, morocco spine label, lettering and rule in gilt, raised bands; new endpapers. First Edition.

One of the great nineteenth-century travel books, and a classic Great Game work. Accompanied by Captain Christie, Pottinger went on an official exploration of the country between India and Persia in 1810. Heavily disguised as natives and accompanied by a native horse-dealer, they travelled by sea to Sinde and overland to Khelat. When they reached the Afghanistan-Baluchistan border, Christie travelled north and Pottinger west. They met up in Isphahan, where Christie was killed in a Russian attack on the Persians in 1812. Pottinger meanwhile had returned to Bombay via Baghdad. Original engraved map has been replaced with a copy.

Lot Amendments

Light wear to original spine strip; front hinge cracked after endpaper, faint toning and occasional marginal foxing throughout; very good.
