Black And White: Land, Labor and Politics in the South

Fortune, T. Thomas

New York

Fords, Howard & Hulbert

310pp.+[2] publisher’s ads. Original brown cloth with gilt spine and cover titles; publisher ad endpapers.  First Edition.

Admiringly called a “militant agitator”, Fortune was the leading African-American journalist at the turn of the century, editor of Booker T. Washington’s first autobiography and of the country’s leading Black newspaper. He coined the term “Afro-American” and laid the foundation for the formation of the NAACP and the later civil rights movement.

In this rare book, “based upon personal knowledge”, Fortune considers Black social and economic problems in the southern states, where, he believed,  poverty transcended race and politics, being an outgrowth of  the  broader economic conflict of labor vs. capital which “afflicts every civilized country on the globe” – a sort of early Marxist analysis.
