To Forbes & Co., Boston: “I enclose the names of some parties who have inquired about Albertypes, they having seen samples of China ware printed for Haviland & Co. of this city. If you can make the negatives for them, we can do the printing. The names are as follows: Jones McDuffee & Stratton; Clark Adams & Clark; Abram French & Co.; D.B. Stedman & Co.; Nicholson & Trist; Homer Lane & Co. Should you require it, I will give written explanations about making the negatives and also send on one for a pattern.” The photographic work of Edward Bierstadt (1824-1906) never achieved the fame of his brother Albert’s classic landscape paintings of the American West. Sketchy historical records suggest that they collaborated for years on stereoscopic photography, using a new “Albert-type” process of photographic printing developed by Bavarian court photographer Josef Albert. When this letter was written, the Bierstadt Brothers were in formal partnership to produce fine books of stereographic views, but whether they also worked together in transferring photographic images to china ware, as here described by Edward, remains an intriguing open question.
